Abstract

This article is written to propose a modern phonological study of Arabic vowels with reference to Quranic verses. We know that Arabic vowels are divided into three different types, fathah, kasrah, and dammah. Today, we need to revisit and revise what has been proposed by the previous scholars, and explore new ways of academic research. Therefore, we shall propose new approaches and methods regarding the issue of Arabic vowels. It is worth noting that the reciters and previous scholars’ research, is given utmost care; yet we have come up with new phonetic rules that are more compatible and suitable to the current academic field findings. We have applied deductive approach and generative analytical tools and have suggested the distinctive features of each sound in this research. Phonological rules are presented in a formalized way, and further non- formalized explanations are given to illustrate vowels distribution. The derivations and phonological rules are applied to Quranic verses to show the respective processes. The main reference that provides corpus for this research is al-Našr fi al-Qirāʾat al-ʿAšr, which is one of the main and important resources in this field of research.
