The paper examines the political and legal ideas of Al-Ustaz Mahmoud Mohamed Taha (1909-1985), discussing his role in espousing religious reform and civil liberty and his vocation of law and syariah renewal. This was encapsulated in his book The Second Message of Islam reflecting his ideal for change and the context of his struggle to modernize Islam and consolidate a modern, egalitarian, democratic and liberal Muslim polity. The paper also highlighted the political development of the 20th century Sudan with the establishment of Republican Brothers (Ikhwan al-Jumhuriyyin), or New Islamic Mission in 1945 as political instrument to challenge the corrupt regime of Jaafar al-Numeyri defying its dominant imperialist and monarchist rule.
